Dixie drawl survives
ATLANTA, Ga. — The younger generation in the South no longer speaks all the dialects of its ancestors, but Dixie retains one of America’s most distinctive speech patterns.
That is the conclusion of the first complete study of Southern vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The 19-year study, sponsored by Emory University in Atlanta and the National Endowment for the Humanities, shows that the “South remains a great repository of oldfashioned speech,” said Lee Pederson, a professor of linguistics and the study’s director.
Dixie’s speech has kept its distinctive character, he said, “because Southerners have relied on the spoken word and the oral tradition and because they haven’t absorbed hundreds of thousands of immigrants.”
Mr, Pederson will publish an atlas in January that contains words and phrases culled from 5,200 hours of interviews he and 350 other researchers conducted throughout the South.
Driver fined in deaths
ABINGDON — A Florida man has been convicted of careless driving and fined $50 in connection with a July 1 accident on the Blue Ridge Parkway that killed an Indiana couple.
Wayne W. Calley, 67, of North Palm Beach, Fla., originally was charged with reckless driving.
He was tried this week in U.S. District Court here.
Calley had been driving north on the federal parkway when his car collided with a motorcycle that was towing a trailer. The two people on the motorcycle, Howard Affolder, 54, and his wife, Beulah Affolder, 51, of Berne, Ind., died while they were being taken to a hospital.
Murder charge certified
Blood stains in a car trunk and testimony by murder defendant Jaime Traverso’s 10-year-old daughter provide the most compelling evidence against him for the strangulation death of his ex-wife who was found floating near the Loudoun County bank of the Potomac River July 30, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Kevin O’Connell told a General District Court judge Friday.
