Wakefield opened its home season for the varsity soccer team against perennial rival Randolph Macon Academy, a team which had trounced Wakefield in the two meetings of the previous season. With numerous observers cheering on the sidelines, the two teams fought valiantly through the first half until David Rowzie, of Amissville, scored on a penalty kick to give Wakefield a 10 halftime lead.
As the second half began, RMA rebounded as theyHoo scored on a penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1. However, with nearly 10 minutes remaining in the game, Ed McGushin, of Haymarket, slipped a long shot into the comer of the goal to give Wakefield a 2-1 lead. With excellent play from goalie Jeff Reid, of Front Royal, and sweeper Jerry McDowell, of Warrenton, Wakefield held on to capture the 2-1 victory.
Although it would be difficult to capture the same intensity in other planned games of the season, the team anxiously awaits the two games scheduled for this week against Seton School and the always tough Rappahannock team in the school’s homecoming game, which is scheduled for Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend the game, which will be played on Wakefield’s new north field.
