The television warnings advise that forthcoming scenes may be too much for young eyes and minds. Some are. But I have yet to see a warning for children or adults to beware of the advertisements about to be shown, that they might be vulgar, obscene, show disrespect for religion, even ridicule.
I was struck by this last week, after watching Dan Rather show great compassion for the victims of the earthquake in Mexico City, finish the evening news with a deeply religious reflection on the meaning of life and death in Mexico City.
His reflection was preceded by an advertisement for hemorrohoidal relief and was followed immediately t.’ an advertisement featuring a man in a Roman collar, presumably a priest, demonstrating the virtues of Polident for cleaning and whitening false teeth.
Here, too, as in the case of the rating system for rock music warnings, I have no certain position.
But if we are going to get into warnings and admonitions of what can and cannot be safely watched or heard, I have an opinion. I would place as important advance warning that some programs to be presented should not be watched by policemen or law enforcement officers.
