The unemployment rate in Virginia was 5.3 percent, matching the local rate. Some 2,916,254 persons comprise the Virginia work force.
The statewide figure for August 1985 is slightly lower than the July rate (5.8 percent) but higher than the same period a year ago when only 4/4 percent of Virginias could not find work.
Nationally, some 8,051,000 persons were unable to find work in August, representing a 6.9 percent rate, lower than the 7.4 percent posted in July 1985 and down from the 7.3 percent recorded in August 1964.
