irginians had a rare opportunity last week to observe, with stunning clarity, the dynamics of change in the politics of the Old Dominion.
That change was illustrated by two events which transpired about 80 miles apart in space, but which might have appeared to have occurred a quarter century or more apart in time.
The first of these took place in Richmond. It was the opening of the spectacular new Sixth Street Marketplace complex with its symbolic bridge spanning Broad Street in the city’s downtown.
Many people don’t know about Broad Street and its symbolism. In the old days of segregation the south side of the street belonged to the whites while the north side was mainly the province of the blacks.
