Meals...and more
People gather three times a week at the Rappahannock nutrition site where hot meals — and a whole lot more — are served to local citizens who are 60 years or older.
Each Monday, Thursday and Friday the Rappahanncok-Rapidan Community Service Center sponsors the event which is held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington. People who attend enjoy the meals, of course, but there are other rewards for going. “It’s bringing people out and bringing them together,” says Jeanne McNear who is a volunteer specialist.
Occasionally special events are offered. Last week local artisan Janet Kerig volunteered her time to teach the fine art of basketweaving. The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community provided the basket making materials — which were put to good use — SEE PHOTOS.
Becky Jolliffe is director of the Rappahannock Nutrition Site where she works directly with the meal program. People may get a free ride to the site by van if they need transportation. Hot meals, along with those that can be frozen, are also delivered to those who cannot leave their homes.
“Becky,” says Jeanne McNear, “really cares a lot about these people.”
