The battering the Republican Party sustained in the 1985 statewide races, plus its loss of a seat in the House of Delegates, makes it all but imperative that it at least hold its own in the congressional battles coming up this fall. That could be no easy task.

Going into the campaigns for Congress, The GOP holds six of the state’s 10 congressional seats. Those ’ include Republican Herbert Bateman of Newport News in the 1st District, Tom Bliley of Richmond in the 3rd, French Slaughter of Culpeper in the 7th, Stanford Parris of Springfield in the 8th and Frank Wolf of Vienna in the 10th.

The list also includes, for the moment, William Whitehurst in the 2nd, but he, to the dismay of his fellow Republicans, is not seeking reelection. The Virginia Beach slot , that he is leaving open is regarded as very much at risk by GOP strategists.
