In terms of the GOP’s long-range plans, coming on the heels of the 1985 defeat, it would be a bitter setback. But a larger loss, say of two or three seats, would be a catastrophe on the order of last fall’s statewide defeats. It could echo through the House of Delegates and state Senate contests of 1987, and through the U.S. Senate race of 1988.
In short, the 1985 and 1986 elections combined could once again decisively shift the ever changing direction of the political winds in the Old Dominion. Heaven help us if we ever got becalmed!
