The Democrats’ Norman Sisisky of Petersburg occupies the 4th District seat while veteran lawmaker W.C. (Dan) Daniel of Danville is running for re-election in the 5th. James Olin of Roanoke is seeking a third term in the traditionally Republican 6th, while in the Highland’s 9th District Democrat Frederick Boucher of Abingdon at this point appears to have no opposition.
While the challenges and candidacies are anything but settled at this early date, talk around the state Capitol and in party circles gives a fairly clear picture of the way the wind is blowing, and the way it’s blowing seems to indicate that the GOP has its work cutout for it in the months ahead.
It appears that three of the six GOP seats, including the open slot in the 2nd will be seriously contested. According to GOP sources only one challenger for the four incumbent Democrats has turned up, although search committees are out scratching for others.
In the 1st District, state Sen. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott is said to be strongly considering a challenge to Bateman. Scott is a proven vote getter and an able legislator who had served in the House of Delegates until 1983 before he moved over to the Senate to become the second black to serve in the upper house. His interest in running may have gotten a boost when Lt. Gov. Douglas Wilder carried the first District 53 percent to 47 percent over his Republican opponent, state Sen. John Chichester in the Nov. 5 election.
In the open 2nd District, it appears that state Sen. A. Joe Canada of Virginia Beach will receive the GOP nod for Whitehurst’s seat. He will be challenged by Del. Owen B. Pickett, also of Virginia Beach, who has announced he will seek the Democratic nomination.
In the 3rd District, Bliley may encounter token opposition. In the 4th the Republicans are trying to flush out an opponent for Sisisky, but so far have had no luck. In the 5th there is also talk of finding an opponent for Daniel, but to date no one has stepped forward to challenge the formidable Dan.
