Children are welcome and if baby cries, mom or dad will be invited to bring the unhappy youngster into the sound proofed projection booth to watch the film. “The projectionist is always delighted to have company,” the film committee chairman added.
The RAAC volunteers have become semi-professionals in the three years movies have been shown. “We’ve only had to cancel once,” Dr. Young said. The film was lost in the mail. “We didn’t find it for two weeks!”
Although there’s been only one cancellation, frantic film committee members have made scores of long distance telephone calls to Atlanta, New York, Chicago, St. Louis and California, trying to track down a late arrival. Finding Terms of Endearment presented the biggest challenge. It was Friday afternoon and the film still hadn’t been delivered. “We called the distributor in Atlanta and he put a copy on the bus for Warrenton. It was supposed to arrive on Saturday but the bus station in Warrenton was closed on Saturday,” Dr. Young recalled. A message was delivered to the driver — in transit — asking that the package be dropped off in Culpeper instead. But by mistake, the film ended up in Washington, D. C. “A kind-hearted bus driver brought it back to Culpeper and we got it to the theater at 7 for the 7:30 showing,” Dr. Young said.
The film committee faces other hassles besides delivery problems.
