In a testament to their credentials as devotees of the silver screen, RAAC’s film committee consistently second guesses the critics and the Academy Award Committee by picking — far in advance — movies that will later be applauded as “Ten Best” selections or Oscar nominees.
Three weeks ago The Washington Post ran a consensus “Best of the Best” list. Seventy movie and magazine reviewers were surveyed and a final ranking was compiled based on the number of times a film was cited by the critics. Finishing one, two and three were Prizzi’s Honor, The Purple Rose of Cairo and Witness. All three have already been shown at the Gay Street Theater, as have other favorites of the critics such as Cocoon, The Killing Fields and Desperately Seeking Susan.
Gay Street Theater-goers saw Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies long before he was nominated for and won the Best Actor Oscar. They saw Linda Hunt in The Year of Living Dangerously before she was a surprise winner as Best Supporting Actress.
