Virginia Chapter of Mothers Against Drunken Driving, said, “We’re winning the fight.”
His greatest cause for hope is the reaction of young people, who have formed chapters of Students Against Drunken Driving. Mrs. Orr, for example, said that the first SADD meeting at Blacksburg High School drew just 10 people. This year more than 150 people attended.
“What we’re trying to say is it’s okay NOT to drink and drive,” said Leigh Brooks, a 17-year-old senior at Lee-Davis High School in Mechanicsville.
She is student advisor for its SADD chapter, which she formed when she was a sophomore after seeing a film in drivers education class about a SADD chapter in Winchester.
“Too many of my friends were driving home drunk,” she explained. “I wanted to educate them about the dangers.”
