I Episcopal Church picnic
Trinity Episcopal Church will hold its annual church picnic on Sunday, August 23, at the home of Mrs. Norman Sims. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish and a beverage.
Flower Show school
The Extension Service, in cooperation with the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, is sponsoring a school on Flower Shows (Course II). ‘Letter to Brezhnev9
Letter to Brezhnev will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, at 7:30 each evening. This movie is about Elaine — a lonely, unemployed young woman — and her brash, fun-loving friend who spend the night with two Russian sailors on 24-hour shore leave in Liverpool. Madly In love, Elaine * writes a letter to Brezhnev, asking permission to join her sailor in the Soviet Union. Brezhnev’s reply precipitates a journalistic sensation, a family crisis and an unexpected social comedy, full of raw language and splashy photography , but it is also preachy in its dizzy defense of the Russian way. It is directed by Chris Bernard. The movie is rated R. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
Jenkins family reunion
The annual reunion for the relatives and friends of the late Luther E. and Ada F. Jenkins will be held August 23 from 11 a.m. until dark at the picnic area of Graves Mountain Lodge, Syria. Those attending are asked to bring a picnic lunch, which will be served at 1 p.m.
