"Rodrigo was used to maids, Thomas to an upperclass life very different from the way we live here, and they both learned to push the vacuum cleaner around and take out the trash,” Mrs. Fisher explained.

“I’ve never pushed a vacuum around!” snorted Thomas, on his way through the kitchen to the basket of chips. “Mothers!” he jokingly complained, smiling at his adopted mom as he reached for the dip.

The host parents did some adjusting, too. “When I’d first introduce them, I’d say, This is Kirsten from Germany’ or This is Rodrigo from Chile.’ But after a month or two, it was This is my daughter Kirsten’ and This is my son Rodrigo,’ ” Mr. Fisher said.

And the Fisher children learned a priceless lesson. “Everyone’s alike, no matter what country they come from,” David said. “I was expecting someone totally different. And they weren’t. They’re just like everyone here.”

“It’s easier than it sounds to make a person part of your family,” added Tara. “It’s so much easier than I thought it would be.”

When her mother and father took Tara to college at VCU in Richmond, her first friend was a young woman from Saudi Arabia. “That wouldn’t have happened without our international family,” Mrs. Fisher contended.
