bark mulch to our planting beds. This is the ideal place for a female snake to lay a clutch of 20-90 eggs. Upon hatching in late summer, the attractively patterned black and light gray young remain in the cosy mulch for weeks before venturing away from their nursery in search of insects and frogs.
If you reside in an area where there are many venomous snakes, you may want to eliminate log and rock piles and other snake-attracting habitat. Should you wish to have the greatest number of nesting songbirds on your property, then attracting black rat snakes will be counterproductive.
My family eigoys the occasional snakes we see as well as families of rabbits, chipmunks and bluebirds. Yes, our snake visitors dine on other residents but that’s what happens in the suburban outback. For us, it's fhn and always interesting to have the outbade on the back steps. What others might view as disturbing, we take in as the next chapter in a story that just never ends.
