eighth and eleventh graders, Dr. Gangel said. After a youngster has been found below grade level, he or she is placed in a remedial program; subsequent monitoring shows if grade level performance has been achieved. Resuling labs at both the elementary school and the high school are already operating to help students “who show problems anywhere down the line," Dr. Gangel said. The new accreditation requirement “might change the number of students” and “increase the emphasis” but “it won’t be a total shock to our school system,” he said.
Administrative staffing requirements in the new accreditation standards won’t be a shock to the county’s school system either; even with the reduction in force of one central office administrator this year, Rappahannock is still well above the minimum.
Based on last year’s closing enrollments, RCES could squeak by without an assistant principal at all, since a half-time assistant must be hired only if enrollment reaches 600. The number of students enrolled there at the end of school was 598. A full time elementary assistant principal is not mandated until enrollment hits 900.
For high schools, a full-time assistant principal is required for each 600 students. Closing enrollment at RCHS last year was 391.
Beginning in 1988-89, students win have to pass literacy tests in reading, writing and mathematics in order to be promoted to the ninth grade. "This is a big one,” Dr. Gangel noted. “We don’t know yet what this is going to mean,” he said, because the state has not yet developed the “passport” test itself. “If the test really has teeth in it, there will be a nugor impact. But if it’s simple, like the minimum competency tests, there may be little effect.”
