Witch hunts alleged
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — State Delegate Clarence Davis has endorsed an effort by followers of political extremist Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. of Virginia to expose alleged witch hunts against the perennial presidential candidate, according to a LaRouche-affiliated publication.
Davis, an east Baltimore Democrat, was identified in a magazine published by the Human Rights Fund of Leesburg, as one of 21 North American charter members and the only elected public official on a panel called the International Commission to Investigate Human Rights Violations in the United States.
The 44-year-old Maryland lawmaker denied Friday that he actually joined the group, although he said he “very strongly” supports its mission. He said he had no plans to protest the membership listing.
LaRouche, who was indicted July 2 by a federal grand jury in Boston, pleaded innocent Tuesday to a charge of conspiring to obstruct a federal probe into an alleged $1 million credit card fraud scheme to finance his 1984 political campaign.
Davis said he thinks the Justice Department has violated LaRouche’s constitutional rights.
“They’re handling the LaRouche thing like the Gestapo,” he said. “You can’t let them handle it like they were the Klan.”
The Washington-based commission, founded March 21, declared in the magazine that it will launch an “independent, impartial investigation” of alleged human rights abuses against LaRouche and his associates during possibly “one of the greatest political witch hunts of this century.”
