rack the bag or lunchbox with perishables such as meat or poultry sandwiches and hardboiled eggs and refrigerate it. The sandwiches will thaw in time for lunch and, in the meantime, help keep the rest of the lunch cool. Do not freeze such things as chips, cookies, tomatoes and lettuce. Add them to the lunch separately.
Other ways to keep lunch cold is to use the new commercial gels, or a plastic margarine tub filled with water and frozen, or a plastic bag filled with ice cubes or a can of cold beverage. Use a thermos to keep milk, juice, or drinks cold. Advise your scholar to put lunch in the coolest place possible, out of direct sun and away from warm radiators.
