j It s a chance for the average citizen to take home items that belonged to America’s greatest history makers.
I During a special sale at The Aucti<T Bam in Catlett Aug. 22, owners Flash and Bernice Pearson will offer potential museum pieces — a document signed by Abraham Lincoln, a book purchased by George Washington and portraits of Jefferson Davis an^l John S. Mosby.
| Three presidents are represented in the auction. There’s the Father of Our Country and his 1788 edition of Capt. James Cook’s “Voyages ’Round The Worid.” This particular book would be valuable enbugh, but “God love ol’ George, he signed it on the third page,” Mrs. Pgarson said.
5 There’s Honest Abe, the 16th president, whose quest for human rights and the circumstances of his untimely death earned him a special pllice in many Americans’ hearts. A w|r document pertaining to an injured soldier’s promotion to paymaster bears his signature, which Mrs. Pearson said has been authenticated by three noted Lincoln experts. S One man who heard about the upcoming sale set out from Ohio to find the auction bam on Route 28 in Virginia that offered an authentic Lincoln document. Usually, the item is in a vault, but Mrs. Pearson had it out that particular day and when the man saw it, he broke out in goose bumps and a cold sweat, Mrs. Pearson .'recalled. He owned several historic documents, but not a Lincoln and was very interested in purchasing it.
To many Southerners, however, . the< signed portrait of Davis, the president of the Confederacy, bears as much historical poignance as the Washington and Lincoln pieces.
And there’s no doubt that the Mosby portrait and J.E.B. Stuart’s carved four-poster bed will bring plenty of excitement — and high prides.
