Two local groups learned last week that they will receive as much as $6,544 from the state to promote literacy in Rappahannock County. The grant, which is part of the Virginia Library Literacy Program, has been given to the Rappahannock County Library, which is involved in a joint project with the Rappahannock Literacy Volunteers.
The Literacy Volunteers, who were formed less than two years ago, now number 15 members in Rappahannock County. The volunteers work one-on-one with adults and teenagers over the age of 16 to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Recently, the program has begun offering instruction in English as a second language.
Several county residents are also working with the Rappahannock Literacy Volunteers to prepare for the GED High School Equivalency Examination. Joyce Pullen, who recently took and passed the GED exam after studying with the volun
