About 150 people attended a fund-raiser Friday at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria for William C. Chase Jr., Democratic nominee for the 26th District State Senate seat representing Rappahannock County. Honored guest for the picnic was Gov. Gerald L. Baliles, who took time off from his three-day tour of the Shenandoah Valley and Northern Piedmont to attend.
Citing Mr. Chase for "qualities of leadership and credibility,” Gov. Baliles told the audience assembled beneath an outdoor shelter that he is committed to helping elect a new senator to represent the 26th District. He said that those in attendance who share his concerns for transportation, educational quality, protecting natural resources and attracting new industry should also work diligently to elect Mr. Chase. “I’m sure all Virginia would be in your debt,” the Governor concluded.
In thanking Gov. Baliles for his support, Mr. Chase told the crowd, “With the proper amount of people working for me, I know I can win.”
Organizers of the fund-raiser called it a success. Donations were still being tabulated and a final figure had not been released early this week. “We’re encouraged by the show of support we received,” Mr. Chase said. “This shows residents of the district want a contested election this fall.”
