Rappahannock County School Superintendent Dr. David Gangel said Tuesday evening that a construction crew working in the high school gymnasium Monday afternoon had uncovered an unknown dust which they feared was asbestos.

Dr. Gangel said that as soon as he was notified of the situation on Tuesday he ordered the entire gym sealed as a precaution until a chemical analysis determined whether or not the substance was asbestos. A sample of the dust was to be taken to Richmond Wednesday morning for tests, he said. Results would be available in “24 to 48 hours,” he added.
