Sixteen members of the congregation of the Washington Baptist Church participated in a mission trip to Friendship House in Newport News on Aug. 20 and 21. The trip was part of the church’s “Christmas in August” program and its Youth Sunday School ministries.
Friendship House is located in the inner city of Newport News, where its mission workers have provided spiritual, financial and social programs and support to youth and the elderly since 1969. “But my major emphasis is evangelism, sharing Jesus Christ,” said Lynn Latham, its director for the past seven years.
While at Friendship House, the participants received an orientation about the facility from Miss Latham and a tour led by Wes Garrett, who began visiting Friendship House when he was eight. Mr. Garrett, now 26, is a former U. S. Army Chaplain who is pursuing a career in the ministry.
After the tour, the visitors went to work on the century-old “home.” The lawn was cut, litter picked up, chairs painted, a basement wall waterproofed, bulletin boards created and a refrigerator cleaned - each task part of a long list of “small” jobs ' Miss Lathaht had compiled.
