“I support Mrs. Baines on the phys. ed.,” said Sharon Kilpatrick, who along with several others who remained until the comment period added endorsements for maintaining the daily phys. ed. program for the upper elementary students. “We need five days a week for the young ones - not two days a week for older ones,” she added.
Also at its August meeting, the School Board:
• Directed Superintendent Gangel to develop a plan for delayed school openings for the board’s review. The consideration of late school opening, long used by the neighboring school divisions to avoid closing when light snow or ice make roads impassable in the early morning hours, comes at the request of the Rappahannock County Education Association and the elementary school’s PTA.
• Opened bids for science lab equipment but accepted neither of the two quotes, deciding instead to readvertise with inclusion of furnishings for a second lab with the specifications to be drawn by one of the bidding firms. The second lab, part of the RCHS expansion planned as a lecture room, is being equipped at the order of the Board of Supervisors; the board made a second fully functional lab a condition for allowing the carry-over of unexpended funds from the 1986-87 school budget to cover the deficit in the high school building fund.
• Heard from Dr. Gangel on assignment of administrative duties. Although the central office position of special services coordinator was cut, “the responsiblities don’t go away. The responsibilities must be reassigned,” he noted. The superintendent said he will take over administration of the gifted and talented programs; the assistant superintendent will be responsible for the capital outlay project, Tit}e 1 and II programs, testing and transportation services; the assistant principal at the elementary school will oversee special education and the high school principal vocational education.
