While embracing international edibles such as “a proper cup of tea,” Austrian Chocolate Balls, Hungarian Turkey, Bavarian Potato Soup and something of unknown origin called Mulligatawny, the Culpeper Memorial Hospital cookbook is not only cosmopolitan, but down-home American as well.
Reminiscent of family reunions and covered-dish dinner-on-theground, easy old favorites like meat loaf, grandmother’s pound cake, and the ubiquitous tuna cheese bake are also well-represented.
Registered nurse Earl Aylor provided the book with the blessed assurance of a basic pie crust (that never fails), and for those who’ve forgotten, Dr. Bruce Redmon donated a refresher course on building the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
The often-sought and shared 30day Friendship Cake, a contribution of the Physical Therapy crowd, is in itself a recipe delectable enough to warrant the $5 price of the book. Grocery hints and kitchen tips throughout the book add immeasurable value to the bargain.
As further evidence of CMH employees’ interest in the growth of the hospital, all profits from the sale of the cookbook compiled by the hospital family will be donated to the Campgain for CMH to support the hospital’s facilities enhancement project, a CMH spokesman said.
“There are so many good cooks at CMH, and we thought it would be fun to share our favorite recipes with others while contributing to the building fund,” said Wayne Weaver, co-chairman of the cookbook committee.
“The response has certainly been enthusiastic. Of the 750 cookbooks printed, 60 sold in the first week without any advertisement,” he added.
After hitting the market in late June, the cookbook had made enough by mid-July to pay for itself. Committee members celebrated with a symbolic! invoice-burning and breathed a collective sigh of relief.
The cookbook contains 250 recipes donated by 88 contributors. To purchase a Culpeper Memorial Hospital cookbook, stop by the auxiliary gift shop or CMH cafeteria. Both are located on the first floor of the hospital just off the main lobby.
