Children with misaligned eyes have the best chance of early detection because their primary problem is so obvious that parents seek medical help. However, children with focusing problems that can lead to amblyopia may go undetected for years. By the time the problem is discovered, it may be too late for effective treatment.
Vision screening of the central distance visual acuity for children can be a valuable tool in the detection of potential eye problems. Finding a difference in vision between the two eyes, that is not caused by other ailments, can alert parents to seek medical attention for their child at a young age.
According to Mr. Pitts, “The Virginia Affiliate-NSPB has trained more than 500 volunteers throughout the state to conduct vision screenings of young children. During 1986-87 Society volunteers screened more than 20,000 children. Through their efforts, many potential vision problems have been de' tected early enough for effective treatment. These screenings are not diagnostic. Parents are encouraged to take their children for regular professional eye exams, especially before they enter school.
