From the signs at last Thursday’s work session, the school budget to be approved next week by the Board of Supervisors will be a mere $19,000 less than the $3,871,698 sought by the Rappahannock County School Board.
Meeting with accountant Wally Cox following a short public hearing on the proposed 198889 educational spending plan, the supervisors directed that $10,000 be trimmed from the instructional category and $9,000 from operation and maintenance of school plants.
“I know we can’t tell them where to take it out, but we can say where we’re taking it from,” noted Chairman Hubert Gilkey.
The supervisors contemplate the reductions coming in sabbatical leave for teachers ($10,000), compliance with the new federal asbestos regulations ($5,000), and “unanticipated” maintenance expenses ($4,000). “If something unanticipated comes up, we can reappropriate the money,” said Mr. Gilkey. He also pointed out that the budget still includes $2,000 for the asbestos coordinator.
