Metcalfe Hatter. He attended Forest Park High School and was graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., in 1941 with a degree in English.
He joined the Baltimore Sunpapers as a city reporter later that year, covering, among other assignments, the last hanging at the Baltimore City jail. Mr. Hatter often joked that the assignment had deterred any thoughts he had about a life of crime.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, including duty with the Counter-Intelligence Corps in the Philippines, rising to the rank of lieutenant.
Mr. Hatter met his future wife, Margaret Moore of Clarksville, while he was stationed at Fort Eustis, Va. They were married in 1946. His wife survives him as do two sons, Lou Jr. of Sperryville and Gary of Winston-Salem, N.C., and a brother, Robert Porter Hatter of Baltimore.
