Flying high above the Atlantic Ocean, I look with great anticipation to my return home to the United States. I have been away for almost six weeks, and I long to listen to the 11 p.m. news in a language I can understand, to count my money in dollars again and have some change left over when I go shopping, to see my family and friends, to eat some familiar foods. In truth, to be able to go into my own kitchen, open the refrigerator and find just anything to eat. Travel anywhere is wonderful and exciting but returning home is what life is really all about.
My visit to Amsterdam was lovely. My hotel was truly European, only 16 rooms, wonderful service and though it was stated, “Bed & Breakfast,” truly the breakfast had a lot to be desired. There was only one other American family in the hotel, and we made friends quickly.
The hotel was located in the museum area, and I was able to walk to the Van Gogh and the National Rijksmuseum in only minutes. The Dutch people are warm and friendly and are only too glad to help in giving directions. Most of the people speak fairly good English and offer their assistance wherever possible. Even the weather was cooperative and after the first morning, when the rains came down in torrents, the sky cleared and the balance of the week was pleasant.
The Americans in the hotel invited me to join them on an auto trip to Aalsmeer, the National Flower Auction Cooperative, where hundreds of thousands of flowers are auctioned off daily and shipped to vendors world wide. The auction bidding begins at 6 a.m. and by 11 a.m., the blooms and plants are on their way to the purchasers, since
