More than a thousand men in 6}ue and gray will charge at each Other in New Market May 8 in the Ingest running Civil War reenactment in the nation. The event at 2 gjn. commemorates 247 teenage Oil cadets who made history at the f864 Battle of New Market.

A Union army had invaded the Shenandoah Valley. The Confederate commander ordered the cadets at Virginia Military Institute to help him turn back this threat. They did, and ten of them died; 47 were wounded. . This will be the 21st annual regaging of the battle at the New Market Battlefield Park, site of the original clash of some 11,000 troops. Park officials look for some 15,000 spectators.

Participants have registered from 13 states and Canada. They are bringing at least 13 cannons, two of them original bronze 12-pounders that shake the ground when they fire, a park spokesman said.

It was getting late in the war when the battle was fought. The armies of U.S. Grant and Robert E. Lee were locked in a death grip in eastern Virginia. A Union army moved south through the Shenandoah Valley to cut a vital railroad.
