Schipol, the Dutch airport, is only five miles away. Flower growing is a living business, and timing is very important in order to control the size of the bloom for the buyers’ consumption. And no, they didn’t give us any samples, but there are flower stalls in every available space. I thought my room in the hotel could use some lovely tulips, and for $2.25 I bought a dozen. How lovely they looked until I was ready to leave on my next leg of my journey.
A trip to Delft, the porcelain factory, took only 45 minutes from Aalsmeer, on a super, super highway, where speed up to 120 kilometers (95 mph) was not uncommon. Theiiighway on both sides was literally filled with beautiful windmills, and taking pictures was an easy and pleasant task. The porcelain factory proved most interesting and watching them throw clay on the potter’s wheel and seeing the beautiful pieces produced was enlightening. Buying gifts to take home was something else, the prices were so very high that I decided against it.
Dinners in Amsterdam were wonderful. Walking along the main street near the hotel, I found a charming Dutch restaurant where the local Yuppies came to eat. Although very bus'’ and with a long wait ahead of me, 1 uecided this was - the place and to my good luck, I was adopted by a charming couple who asked me to join them. The food was superb, they assured me, and indeed it was. Oysters the size of a clenched fist were ambrosia and my dinner of poached salmon in white wine was incredible. In fact, I repeated the visit two days later.
My days were spent in visits to the local galleries and museums, a visit to the diamond factory where I held more than 50 carats of diamonds in my hands, and a cruise through the canals. By the end of
