The finale came the third night at a black tie dinner with a circus theme. “There were 700 people dining in this huge hall, and they brought the circus inside! Trained dogs. Dancing elephants that did the ballet, and while they lumbered around, human dancers ON TOP of the elephants did the ballet. The waiters changed costumes between courses, dressing like clowns, acrobats, lion tamers, and in zebra suits,” Mr. O’Connell recalled.
The financing for these lavish fetes comes from the Relais & Chateaux sponsors, such businesses as Remy Martin, Iron Horse, Air France, Porthault Linens, and Taittinger Champagne. The organization is as discriminating here as it is with its membership. “Only the finest organizations are accepted. They have a backlog that want to give huge sums of money as sponsors,” Mr. O'Connell reported.
