The gypsy moth is an introduced pest. It was brought to Medford, M&ss., in 1869 from Europe by a French scientist who hoped to cross jt with silk worms and develop a Jiardy breed of silk-producing Jnoths. But gypsy moth caterpillars (larvae) escaped and by the late jl800s were well established in the area surrounding Medford. Since then the gypsy moth has spread throughout the Northeast and isolated infestations exist in several Mid-Western and Western states. ! In the past, several local infestations of the gypsy moth were found Jn Virginia, but concerted efforts .eliminated them. By 1982, however, sightings around Richmond and along the Bay to Virginia Beach confirmed that gypsy moths are well esjtablished in the Commonwealth. \
