That $156,000 in the draft budget for refuse collection, supplemented by about $30,000 from the $400,000 line item for maintenance of the county landfill, is intended to cover hauling trash from the two dumpster sites at Huntly and Scrabble and running the new landfill, probably under contract with a private licensed operator.
“I’m comfortable with our estimates on construction," said Mr. McCarthy, adding that he expects the bids opened on May 13 to be within the $350,000 anticipated for development of the facility. “But I'm not as sure about the amount we’ve allocated for operation." For that reason he advocated advertising the 52-cent rate to provide a cushion. “We can always lower the rate if we don’t need more money for the landfill. But we can't raise it without re-advertising.”
Advertised rate is 10 percent raise in local taxes
The county’s $6.5 million draft budget for 1988-89 represents an 8.9 percent increase over this year's $5,982,901. To meet the contemplated expenditure would take a rate of 62 cents per $100 of assessed value of real estate. However, by drawing $391,688 from accumulated surplus, the supervisors will knock off 10 cents.
