clear reactor in Charlottesville. Before conducting the experiments, they toured the facility with nuclear researcher Bo Hosticka, who explained the design and operation of the reactor. Mr. Hosticka pointed out that there are 21 different signals which will cause the reactor’s safety systems to shut it down within one second.
The students used one of the facility’s research laboratories to compare the penetrating abilities of alpha and gamma radiation, to measure the resolving-time limitations of their Geiger tubes, and to observe the counter pulses on oscilloscopes.
After a break for lunch, the junior and senior science students returned to the laboratory to take a series of timed counts of radioactive barium. Then they analyzed the results to determine the isotope's halflife.
Senior Angie Armentrout observed that “to figure out the halflife of a radioisotope from the data is easy, but to figure it out by the equation is a different story!”
