Since Rappahannock County approved its first Agricultural and Forestal District in 1980, the rules governing this voluntary contract between landowners and local government have changed. And with that first 700-acre Johnson District corning up for renewal in July, Robert Dennis, president of the Warrenton-based Piedmont Knvironmental Council, was before the Rappahannock supervisors on Monday to explain renewal procedures and the new regulations enacted by the 1988 Virginia General Assembly.
In petitioning local government for creation of an Agricultural and Forestal District, a single landowner or a group of landowners with a minimum of 500 acres essentially agree to maintain their property in farm or forestry use or in open space for a specified period of time, originally four to eight years.
In return for this contract to forego development, qualifying properties in the district are automatically eligible for use
