In Virginia, protective services to older and disabled adults are provided by the Virginia Department of Social Services. Those who receive these protective services are:

• tiO years of age or older.

• Mentally ill or chronically mentally ill adults.

• Mentally retarded adults.

• Physically ill or disabled adults.

Seventy percent of the reports that the Department received during the 1987 fiscal year involved persons who are t>0 years of age or older. ;50 percent were between 18 and 00 years of age.

"Persons who receive these protective services cut across a wide economic range. They may have no income, or have a very comfortable income. They may also be too frail or confused to continue to care for themselves," Social Service Commissioner Larry D. Jackson says.
