Department statistics indicate that nearly three-quarters of the Virginia reports alleged neglect, with 55 percent of the cases alleging self-neglect. A family member was the alleged perpetrator in nearly 29 percent of the reports with the child being most frequently named in nearly 14 percent of the cases.
Physicians, nurses, or any person who is employed by a public or private agency or facility working with adults is mandated to report any instance where there is a reason to suspect that an adult is either abused, neglected, or exploited. Social workers, mental health professionals, and law enforcement officers are also required to report any suspected situation.
