from maintenance of buildings and grounds, $5,000 coming from the asbestos coordinator and $4,000 for unanticipated maintenance costs.
Supervisor Ellis Bingham maintained that it would be “inappropriate” to share a position of asbestos coordinator with two other school divisions, as proposed. “I question how much use we’d get out of him,” Col. Bingham said, suggesting that the $2,000 remaining in that line item be used to send Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell to school for training as Rappahannock’s asbestos coordinator, a position required by AHERA, the new federal asbestos removal law.
As for the $4,000 deleted from the maintenance category, Chairman Gilkey told Dr. Gangel that “as in the past when emergencies have arisen, you can come back to the board (for a supplemental appropriation).”
In addition to the $17,000 dropped from the proposed school budget, the supervisors added $12,000, all of it flow-through money from the state, for the new regional gifted and talented program for which Rappahannock is serving as fiscal agent.
