Colonel R. L. Suthard, superintendent of the Virginia State Police, said that troopers issued 1,222 summonses and 1,902 warnings to motor vehicle drivers and front seat passengers for safety belt violations during the first month of 1988.
Virginia’s safety belt law requiring front seat occupants of most motor vehicles to use safety lap and/or harnesses became effective Jan. 1. The law extends to all motor vehicles equipped or required by law to be equipped with a safety belt system — generally any passenger vehicle manufactured since 1963.
‘These statistics should not be interpreted as an indication of whether most Virginians are using or not using their safety belts,” Colonel Suthard said. “Our preliminary information indicates that a majority of motorists are buckling up; how - ever. we don’t expect any definitive
