snooker, and cricket. Others — soccer, hockey, and basketball — were already common knowledge to me, as they are to most Americans.
Rugby, which is similar to football, is probably one of the easiest English games to figure out. It is played in America as well, but on a much different level. The UK version has more finesse and skill than the brutal and violent game played in the States. It is a game that allows the players to throw as well as kick the ball (imagine an obese football and you have a rugby ball), only the ball must be passed backwards. The only protection that rugby players wear is a durable jersey — if you consider a jersey, no matter how durable, to classify as protection against a burly 250-pound muscleman.
A much more genteel game popular in England is cricket. Why it’s called cricket, I don’t know. Actually, I don’t really know anything about the game at all. I’ve watched it on the tellie (television), and I’ve asked the locals about it but the only answer or explanation I get is, “If you didn’t grow up playing it, don’t bother trying to learn it!”
It seems to be a little like a baseball game that can last up to three days. Sorry. That’s the best I can do.
