A stable fire early Tuesday morning killed two horses owned by Allen Olson and destroyed his barn on the Fodderstack Road between Washington and Flint Hill.
Roth horses were trapped in their stalls by the fire and were unable to escape. A third horse kept in the barn's summer stall, Mr. Olson said, jumped a fourfoot gate and escaped with scrapes and minor burns.
The two horses killed, he said, were Shandy, winner of the Old Fashioned Roint-to-I'oint series in 19N3 and an experienced foxhunting mount, and Shimarose, a 3-year-old filly Mr. Olson was training for steeplechasing and foxhunting.
Mr. Olson said Tuesday afternoon that Frank Minor, the horse which escaped the blaze, so far does not appear to have sustained any major injuries. Although it will be several weeks before he determines whether the horse suffered from smoke inhalation, he said, "I hope that we’ll be back for the fall season."
Frank Minor is Mr. Olson’s replacement for Satan’s Lite, which the Warrenton attorney rode for several racing seasons until the horse’s untimely death late last fall. So far, Frank Minor has taken Mr. Olson to third place finishes at Old Dominion and Middleburg during the spring jioint-to-point season.
