Virginia Governor Gerald L. Battles has named the week of May 1 through 7 as Virginia Older and Disabled Adults Abuse Prevention Week.
The observance, which coincides with National Older Americans Abuse Prevention Week, is being held to heighten public awareness of the growing elder and disabled abuse problem in Virginia.
The number of adults needing protective services in Virginia has been steadily increasing over the last several years. The 1987 fiscal year included 5,116 reports of alleged neglect or abuse, a 36 percent increase over the previous year, according to the Virginia Department of Social Services.
On the national level, it is estimated that from 550,000 to 2.5 million elders are the victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation.
