The House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment, chaired by Congressman Waxman, will be holding a hearing on May 16. The subject of the hearing is the “LD-50” Test.
The committee will be voting on bill H.R. 1635, Consumer Products Safe Testing Act of 1987. This bill could stop the “LD-50” test. This test is not used to advance the cause of science or medical research. It is an outdated bureaucratic regulation dreamed up in the 1920s.
“LD-<50” stands for Lethal Dose50 percent. This means that the test is used to determine the quantity or “dose” of a product that will kill 50 percent of the animals in a test group. What really happens is dogs, cats, rabbits and other creatures are forced to swallow liquid bleach, breathe insecticides and deodorants and have caustic substances such as oven cleaners applied to their bare skin. The results are horrible. Thousands of animals are killed, many more are mutilated and they all suffer excruciating pain.
