As a country, we generate more tonnage each day than any other country in the world and we are approaching the point where landfills are in fact “filling up.” Burning refuse is apparently not the solution; the resulting ash still has to be placed somewhere and much of it is toxic which could cause pollution problems in the long run. Recycling of glass, paper, metals and certain plastics may be a solution to the problem, and many communities have embarked on such programs.
