RICHMOND - Substantial increases in mutor vehicle theft, forcible rape and robber,' account for most of the 7.8 percent increase in Virginia’s Crime Index for the first six month's of 1988 compared to a similar period last year. The Crime Index consists of those crimes considered to represent the most local crime problem, and the most serious by nature of motive or the volume in which they occur.
Colonel R. L. Suthard. State Police Sujierintendent. said motor vehicle thefts jumped from 6.463 for the first six months of 1987 to 8,059 (up 24.7 percent) this year, forcible rapes climbed from 099 to 815 (up (10.6 percent i, and robberies increased form 2.795 to 3.235 (up 15.7 percent).
Lesser increases were reported for larceny-theft. 71.790 to 77,015 (up 7.3 percent), and burglary, 22.27" to 23.452 (up 5.3 percent), while slight decreases were recorded for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter. 216 to 215 (down .5 percent', and aggravated assault, 4.390 to 4,337 (down 1.3 percent). L.tal serious crimes reported climbed from 108,637 to 117,128.
