Suthard, “but an even greater percentage increase was reported by counties wiht more than 100,000 population. We don’t have the number of Index crimes in the large counties that we do in the cities, but statistics definitely show than crime is not ocnfined to the state’s urban areas."
Arrests increased by 11.2 percent in cities over 100 population and by 21.1 percent in counties of the same size. Especially noteworthy is the increase in arrests involving motor vehicle theft, up 61.5 percent in these counties and up 55.9 percent in the cities. Police also recovered $39,322,132 of the $89,471,228 worth of property reported stolen from January through June of this year.
“There are many factors which affect the type and volume of crime that occurs in a given area,” said Col. Suthard. “The most important and vital influences on crime are economic status and composition of the population, density and size of the community, climate, effective strength of the police force and the relationships and attitudes of law enforcement and the community.”
