Following the inspector’s recommendations on whether any asbestos found should be either encapsulated and contained or else removed immediately, Rappahannock must develop an asbestos management plan for submission by Oct. 12, according to the federal AHERA regulations. “It may have financial implications for us in the short run,” noted Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell, who recently completed a four-day EPA training course to meet the federal mandate for local AHERA coordinators. “I know of other school divisions where areas were designated for immediate removal, and it’s a very expensive business to remove asbestos.”
