Major General Fred Elam, commander of Fort Eustis, Virginia, extended a special invitation to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wingfield to visit the Army’s transportation center. The base is located a few miles east of Williamsburg.
Mr. Wingfield received the invitation after he told Gen. Elam about his experiences as a young boy at Fort Eustis during World War II. Among his memories were serving as the mascot of the post baseball team and visiting with wounded soldiers at the base hospital. He also had an opportunity to talk with German prisoners of war who were being held at the base, and remembered observing troops being trained for action in the European theatre.
When they arrived at the post headquarters on July 22, Mr. and Mrs. Wingfield were greeted at the office of the chief of staff. Following their welcome, they were escorted to the post historian, the director of Army youth activities, toured
