Virginia has been fortunate over the last decade to have been allowed to meet water quality objectives through a voluntary system of best management practices. The Department of Forestry has encouraged loggers and landowners to comply with the volunteer efforts. The Board and the Department of Forestry is responding to the increased concern of the citizens of the Commonwealth and is changing some of its program emphasis to water quality. If the reduction of sedimentation goals are not being met, tne State Forester, with the Board of Forestry’s concurrence, will draft and submit appropriate legislation for mandatory best management practices for silvicultural activities in Virginia.
